Princess Tatiana on her unexpected divorce: 'Being part of the Greek royal family has been a privilege'

Tatiana Blatnik has said being with her former husband Prince Nikolaos of Greece was "a privilege" but admitted "ending a long marriage is never easy".

The couple was married for 14 years and separated in April, 2023.

Prince Nikolaos remarried just 10 months after ending his relationship with Tatiana, who was able to retain her princess title after the split.

The end of their marriage came as a shock to the public, along with Blatnik who previously described the impact on her as like having "lost another layer of identity".

Now, she has spoken to Spain's Vanity Fair about the challenging time in her life which also saw the death of her stepbrother, who disappeared while hiking in Malibu.

"Ending a long marriage is never easy, but it is possible to separate with love and dignity if you prioritise mutual respect," Princess Tatiana told the publication as she appeared on its July cover.

"We didn't give up on anything. We moved on to a new stage".

She and Prince Nikolaos married on August 25, 2010, with royalty from across Europe attending the festivities.

They didn't have any children together and their separation was announced in a statement by the Greek royal family's press office.

Prince Nikolaos is the son the late King Constantine of Greece, who died in January 2023, and Queen Anne-Marie of Denmark, the sister of Queen Margrethe II.

Nikolaos remarried in February, tying the knot with Chrysí Vardinogianni in Athens. They are said to have been friends with for some time.

Earlier this year Princess Tatiana, 44, told her followers on social media that she would continue to live in Greece despite her divorce.

She was born in Venezuela and grew up in Switzerland before moving to the US and then London. Her mother is German, but grew up in Spain, and her father is Slovenian.

Speaking to Vanity Fair Spain she said: "Being part of the Greek royal family has been a privilege and an honour. I've learned so much: values ​​like love and service to the homeland, family unity, and, of course, I got to know Greece.

"I admire and respect them all, especially their strong family unity.

"Being married to Nikolaos has been a privilege, and I will always have deep respect for him. Our history has marked a very important stage in my life. Without him, I wouldn't live in Greece."

She added: "Greece is my home; I'd never lived in a country for so long. I've harboured a deep sense of belonging to what I consider my country.

"Staying wasn't the easy path, but easy isn't my thing [laughs]. Starting over somewhere else would have been easier on paper, but not in my heart."

Princess Tatiana said she was continuing to focus her energy on Breathe, the organisation she founded in 2020, described as a "mindful mental health movement".
