Princess of Wales' Dior debut turns heads but she isn't the first royal to wear the French fashion house

The Princess of Wales made her debut in Dior for the start of the French state visit.

Kate's stunning blush look marks the first time since marrying into the British royal family 14 years ago that she's worn an ensemble by the Parisian fashion house.

But she isn't the first royal to wear the brand, with her sister-in-law Meghan Markle among those who have donned the label in the past.

The Princess of Wales opted for the 30 Montaigne rose des vents bar jacket from the 2024 collection.

It was a piece the brand's first female designer, Maria Grazia Chiuri, made in homage to the original, which was designed by Christian Dior himself in 1947.

Kate added a matching hat by British milliner Jess Collett, along with a suede clutch by British brand Mulberry in a masterclass of diplomatic dressing, mixing brands from both countries.

She rounded out the outfit with her go-to nude leather Gianvito Rossi pointed toe pumps.

The Princess of Wales completed her striking look with the late Princess Diana's pearl and diamond drop earrings and a triple-strand pearl necklace from Queen Elizabeth's collection.

Kate's usual bouncy blow dry was replaced by a chic wavy French look that trailed down her back.

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

While it's the first time Kate's worn the designer, the Duchess of Sussex was seen so many times in Dior that reps were forced to deny there was a brand deal in place with the royal.

Meghan's most notable Dior look was at Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving in July 2022.

The event was held at St Paul's Cathedral and attended by members of the royal family, with Meghan wearing the belted white coat dress with matching gloves by Dior Haute Couture and a matching hat by Stephen Jones for Dior.

A few months later, Meghan returned to a Stephen Jones for Dior, wearing a wide-brimmed hat for the late Queen's funeral.

The Duchess of Sussex first wore the Paris label as a royal to the centenary celebrations for the Royal Air Force in 2018.

She wasn't the first member of the British royal family to champion the brand though.

Prince Harry

Prince Harry wore a traditional morning suit with a matching double-breasted waistcoat and light silk tie by Dior for his father's coronation in 2023, shunning the choice of a British brand for the momentous occasion.

While it's also suspected his 2022 outfit for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving was also by the brand, that hasn't been confirmed.

Princess Margaret

Princess Margaret was the first, when she took her 21st birthday portraits with famed photographer Cecil Beaton wearing Dior.

She also wore the gown for her 21st birthday party and the look is so iconic, it is now in a museum.

Queen Elizabeth's younger sister was a regular at the designer's fashion shows in Paris and regularly wore the brand throughout her life.

Princess Diana

Princess Diana, Kate's late mother-in-law, most famously wore Dior for the 1996 Met Gala in New York, the year before her death.

It was her first and only appearance at fashion's night of nights, which celebrated the opening of a retrospective of Christian Dior's work.

The navy slip with black lace straps was designed by then creative director John Galliano for the event and was considered risqué by royal standards.

Princess Diana's link to the brand goes even deeper than that though.

After one of the brand's handbags became a firm favourite of the royal's in 1995 and was seen on her arm at every occasion, it renamed the bag Lady Dior in honour of her name before marriage, Lady Diana Spencer.

Queen Camilla

King Charles' wife, Queen Camilla, also used the brand as a chance for some diplomatic dressing.

Her Majesty made her Dior debut during their state visit to France in September 2023.

Camilla donned a stunning haute couture midnight blue floor-length caped gown for the state dinner at the Palace of Versailles.

So while Kate has sported the high-end label finally, there have been a number of other royals who have paved the way for her.
