Princess Mary and the Danish royals: A look inside one of Europe's oldest monarchies
Crown Princess Mary made Australian history when she went from commoner to future Queen of Denmark in 2004, marrying the heir to the throne of one of Europe's oldest monarchies.
From Mary Donaldson to Crown Princess, Mary's marriage brought more changes than just a new title.
Tasmanian-born Mary now had a number of relatives who collectively make up the Danish royal family — a dynasty directly related to many of Europe's reigning royal houses, including the British royals, that has been in power for more than 1000 years.

The Danish royal family: A who's who
At head of the House of Glücksborg — the family that has occupied the Danish throne for nearly 160 years — is Queen Margrethe II.
She was married to Prince Henrik for 51 years before he died in 2018.

The monarch and Prince Henrik have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.
Prince Joachim is married to Princess Marie and they have two children, Prince Henrik and Princess Athena.
Prince Joachim was previously married to Princess Alexandra and they have two sons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix.

When the current monarch passes, Crown Prince Frederik will accede to the throne as King with Crown Princess Mary to become Queen Consort.
Their eldest son Prince Christian is second-in-line to the throne, followed by Princess Isabella, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

The Danish royal palaces and residences
The Danish royals use not one but 10 palaces and residences throughout the year.
The grandest is Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, the winter palace.

Prince Frederik and Princess Mary live in Frederik VIII's Palace at Amalienborg but move around the country depending on the event and season.
The family even has a lavish hideaway in the south of France with its very own vineyard.
