Princess Isabella jokes about viral moment during first official speech at 18th birthday celebrations

When Princess Isabella took the podium at one of two official 18th birthday parties held in her honour, it marked her first official speech as a member of the Danish royal family.

And while she delivered the speech in perfect Danish, it can now be revealed that Princess Isabella, who turns 18 on April 21, started her speech by delivering a joke about an infamous moment in her young life.

Four years ago, a camera caught Princess Isabella asking her mother, Queen Mary, "Are you completely confused?" during a photo call after Prince Christian's confirmation.

The exchange, a video of which went viral, was described by many as 'tense'.

Now, Princess Isabella has joked about the controversy in her first official speech, which was delivered during the April 11 party at Aarhus City Hall.

"Almost four years ago, I found out that your words can be overheard when you least expect it," Princess Isabella said, as the audience erupted into laughter.

"Today, I have no doubt that the microphone is on."

The Daily Mail said Fie West, the entertainment editor of Danish publication Billed Bladet, praised the young princess for making such a bold statement.

"Princess Isabella shows great initiative by starting her very first official speech with a joke," Fie reportedly said.

"She speaks [of] something that many Danes remember and have brought a smile to their faces, and it is extremely charming that she displays self-irony."

While Princess Isabella was admonished by some over the 2021 exchange, many commentators agreed it was simply part of a usual exchange between a mother and her teenage daughter.

Indeed, Queen Mary looked on in pride at her eldest daughter during the weekend's birthday party and walkabout.

The Danish Royal Family's official Instagram page marked the occasion with a post.

"Young people from all over Aarhus Municipality paid tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella with a flag, song and cake at the town hall on Friday, where the afternoon offered music, dance, fashion and a festive atmosphere created by the town's young people."

It is one of two official events planned to mark Isabella's 18th birthday, with another to take place within hours.

A special performance will be held at The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen, where Isabella is expected to wear the Order of the Elephant insignia for the first time.

More than 1000 young people from across Denmark were handpicked to attend the performance.

Princess Isabella's official birthday celebrations were brought forward to avoid a clash with Easter Monday.

It is expected she will celebrate the big day at a private party with her family.

A series of official portraits to mark Princess Isabella's coming of age were released in the lead-up to the birthday celebrations.

Princess Isabella is in her final year of schooling and is expected to graduate at the end of June.
