Fears coronavirus will stop the Queen from attending Princess Beatrice's wedding

Princess Beatrice will marry her Italian fiancé, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, in the coming months but as the coronavirus pandemic worsens, there are fears her wedding plans may be affected.

One UK publication has gone so far as to raise suggestions Her Majesty the Queen will avoid the wedding due to COVID-19.

But so far, the Queen remains in London at Buckingham Palace, despite reports she had left the capital to avoid infection.

Queen Elizabeth, 93, has made changes to her royal diary amid the spread of the virus, which has now claimed 35 lives in the UK.

A majority of the coronavirus-related deaths in the UK have been people aged over 60 and with underlying health conditions.

"In consultation with the Medical Household and Government, Her Majesty's forthcoming visits to Cheshire and Camden will be rescheduled," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said on Friday.

"Audiences will continue as usual. Other events will be reviewed on an ongoing basis in line with the appropriate advice."

The British government will announce new social distancing advice for elderly people on Monday, reports the BBC. Health Secretary Matt Hancock says over the coming weeks people over the age of 70 will be asked to stay home for "a very long time".

Princess Beatrice's wedding is scheduled for May 29 inside The Chapel Royal, at St James's Palace. The location – in London – is believed to have been chosen to ensure the Queen and Prince Philip would be able to attend.

Their reception will be held in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, following an offer from the monarch.

Before the palace confirmed the date and venue, there were reports the wedding would take place in Italy. Edoardo is of Italian descent and he proposed to Beatrice while on holidays there in September.

While it's highly likely the Queen and Prince Philip will be able to attend their granddaughter's wedding, some of the guests coming in from overseas – especially Italy – could be stopped at the border.

Edoardo's family are from the Lombardy region of northern Italy, which was the first to quarantine 16 million people earlier this month.

While it's hoped Italy's lockdown will be lifted by May, the situation has "cast doubt over the guest list", the Telegraph UK reported last week.
