Sir Tim Laurence gave an update on Princess Anne's recovery after visiting his wife in hospital.

The 69-year-old told waiting media on Tuesday that the Princess Royal is "doing fine", days after she received head injuries and a concussion following an incident with a horse at their Gatcombe Park estate.

He added that his wife's recovery was "slow but sure" as he left Southmead Hospital in Bristol carrying a blue cooler bag.

When asked if he'd brought lunch from home inside the cooler bag, Laurence admitted he had brought some "treats" for his wife, 73.

The Vice Admiral, a retired Navy officer who enjoys a low profile within the British royal family, told a well-wisher as he left the hospital that the couple have been blown away by the outpouring of support they'd received.

"She is recovering well, thank you," he said when asked about his wife's condition.

"We are both profoundly grateful to the medical team and hospital support staff for their expert care, and to the emergency services who were all so wonderful at the scene.

"We are both deeply touched by all the kind messages we have received from so many people near and far. It means a great deal."

Princess Anne was believed to be out walking by herself when the incident took place but due to the concussion causing temporary memory loss, the exact events are unsure.

The Princess Royal's medical team believe her injuries are consistent with a hit from a horse's head or legs.

The hospital, about 48 kilometres from the royal's Gloucestershire home, has a specialist neuroscience unit.

As a result of the incident, Princess Anne has cancelled all planned engagements for this week, including her attendance at the state banquet for the Japanese emperor and empress.

The Princess Royal was also due to visit Canada at the end of the week, which has also been cancelled on doctor's advice.

It's not the first time the royal has been injured by her beloved horses.
