Prince William retraces Princess Diana's footsteps at Christ the Redeemer

Prince William has not only followed in his mother's famous footsteps but also recreated photos from her 1991 visit to Brazil.

The Prince of Wales visited the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, a place Princess Diana had also visited solo 34 years ago.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson told travelling media Prince William has "been incredibly struck by the number of people who fondly remember his mother's visit to this beautiful city".

The spokesperson said the royal "has loved meeting so many people from across Rio over the last few days".

The future king looked out over Guanabara Bay and at Sugarloaf Mountain just as his mother had done more than three decades ago.

After taking in the view from Mount Corcovado - where the Christ the Redeemer statue sits in the Tijuca National Park - the 43-year-old enjoyed some time away from the cameras as he was shown the chapel that sits underneath the statue.

William is in Rio for his annual Earthshot Prize ceremony, which takes place in the coming hours and features performances from Kylie Minogue and Shawn Mendes.

Among the finalists is Australia-based architect Fred Holt, who is up for the Build A Waste Free World award for Sydney's Quay Towers, the world's first upcycled skyscraper.

During Princess Diana's visit in 1991, she also went to Copacabana Beach, where Prince William played beach volleyball earlier in the week.

It's not the only time this week the royal will follow in his parents' footsteps.

Diana made the six-day trip alongside then-husband Prince Charles, who hosted an environmental seminar aboard the royal yacht in Belem, where William will visit tomorrow to attend the UN's climate change summit, COP30, on his father's behalf.

The father-of-three is making the five-day South American visit solo, while wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, stays in the UK with the couple's children who are all in school.
