Prince Harry sent his father a "deeply personal note" to try and repair their fractured relationship before returning to England for the funeral of his grandfather.

The Duke of Sussex was forced to write to Prince Charles after a "complete communication breakdown", reports The Mirror.

It follows Prince Harry and Meghan's tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey where they made a number of startling allegations against the royal family.

The Sussexes claimed an unnamed member of the family had raised "concerns" about the potential darkness of son Archie's skin, while Meghan said she was denied medical help after experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Harry then accused his brother Prince William and father of being "trapped" within the monarchy, expressing sympathy they couldn't leave as he had done.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intention to step back from their positions as senior working royals in January, 2020, with that decision being finalised in February this year under an agreement with Her Majesty the Queen.

Prince Charles and Prince William, along with others within the family, are said to have been deeply hurt by Harry and Meghan's claims and their decision to go ahead with the interview when Prince Philip was so ill.

The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to hospital in mid-February and remained there for 28 days, his longest stay.

Prince Harry and Meghan's tell-all with Oprah aired on March 7 in the US.

The Duke of Sussex had been in isolation at his California home in preparation to fly back if his grandfather's health took a turn for the worse.

He returned to England on April 11, two days after Prince Philip died.

Before then, Harry had attempted to smooth things over with his father who he would be seeing for the first time – face to face – in more than a year.

"He wrote a deeply personal note to his dad to try and set things straight but tensions are still running high," a royal source told The Mirror.

In a series of letters Harry "outlined his reasons for leaving" the UK, while promising to "respect the institution" moving forward.

Relations between Harry and his father had "hit rock bottom", the publication claims.

Harry himself alluded to that breakdown to Oprah, telling her Prince Charles had stopped taking his calls when he and Meghan were temporarily living in Canada in late 2019.

Prince Harry said he'd been trying to work out the terms of his exit from the royal family with his father, but those talks weren't progressive.

He and Meghan later announced their plans to step back via their now-defunct Instagram page.

Now that Harry has returned to Windsor, he's realised "there is a lot of ground to make up" with his family, with the situation "very, very raw".

Prince Charles has reportedly returned to his home in Wales, Llwynywermod, while Prince Harry is understood to be keen to return to Meghan in California as soon as possible.

It's unclear whether Harry will remain in Windsor for another day, to celebrate his grandmother the Queen's 95th birthday tomorrow.
