Prince Harry has conducted a wide-ranging interview with GQ magazine’s One More Question series, opening up about grief, the status of his family rift and why he and Meghan really moved back to the UK.

The 45-minute sit-down was recorded during his trip to New York in September but was published on Tuesday (Wednesday morning AEDT), as the rest of the British royal family hosted the sultan of Oman during a state visit.

Prince Harry was happy to talk about wanting to reconcile with his dad, King Charles, and brother, Prince William, during the interview with Zach Baron but gave away little on the current state of his relationship with them.

The 42-year-old, who has just released a grief video on learning platform MasterClass alongside expert Dr Mary-Frances O’Connor, admitted he had grieved the loss of his relationship with his dad and brother.

Prince Harry said he believed it was a “massively relatable issue for so many people”.

“People maybe look at us and go, ‘How are you gonna work it out?’ And then maybe, ‘How I see you’re gonna work it out, maybe that will help me work my stuff out’.”

The prince was asked how he plans to “work it out” in his own life.

“Well, some people don’t want it to work out,” he said.

“I want it to work out ... with everything else that’s going on in the world, the most important thing is to reconcile. That’s the key point.”

When pressed on whether his wounds could ever be repaired by the reconciliation he wanted, Prince Harry remained hopeful and spoke about “letting go of the past”.

"Scars stick around forever, but what your perception is and what your mindset is to those things that have happened, certainly letting go of the past, that's something that I would encourage everybody to do," he said.

"If there's certain things from the past that are still affecting your every day, that's harder to let go of.

"But yeah, for me, there's enough drama in the world and enough drama in people's lives than to continue with issues with family, you know? It's just not worth it. That's hard to say to people when you're in it."

‘A whole different experience’

Prince Harry revealed his move back to the UK with wife Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, was not a “long-planned” one.

The Sussexes relocated to the Cotswolds in the UK for “an extended stay” at the end of August, just in time for the seven-year-old prince and five-year-old princess to start school in September.

Their arrival came only a couple of weeks after the move was announced.

The Duke of Sussex revealed during the interview it was a quick turnaround for them too.

“This wasn’t something that we planned for a long time, it’s something that we’ve thought about and we’ve considered, but for us when certain stars align and it’s clear that this should or probably will end up being the case, then we lean into that,” Prince Harry said.

The royal said it was a combination of what life is like in the US at the moment – alluding to the Trump administration – along with the opportunities that awaited him in the UK, that made them make the change.

“Being able to put the kids in a British school has meant a lot to me,” he admitted.

“I didn’t know how important it was to me. I always thought it was gonna be something that we would try and do, but now they’ve been in school for two weeks, they’re loving it, and it’s just giving them a whole different experience.”

“It’s been nice to be close to friends, family, friends of friends and their children as well, to be able to have endless play dates to really help our kids settle in,” he said.

But, Harry said the ultimate draw card was being “closer to my family and to be back on UK soil for longer than a few days or a week here or there”.

It’s understood the Duke of Sussex is meeting with King Charles on a weekly basis but is yet to meet with Prince William.
