Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced the birth of their daughter, Lilibet 'Lili' Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.

The couple shared a statement on their Archewell website to mark the newborn's arrival — making Lili's birth announcement very different to that of older brother Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor on May 6, 2019.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were still senior working members of the royal family at the time of Archie's arrival two years ago, meaning the announcement of his birth was dictated a little more by royal protocol than for Lili's.

At the time, Buckingham Palace announced Meghan had gone into labour hours after she had in fact returned to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor with their newborn.

Soon after, a grinning Prince Harry famously fronted the cameras outside a horse stable, officially announcing Archie's arrival.

Prince Harry told reporters about the "amazing experience" of being by Meghan's side for Archie's birth.

"How any woman does, what they do, is beyond comprehension," Harry said.

"As every father and parent will ever say your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to-die-for."

However, the public waited two days for their first look at the little one and for the announcement of his name, which came via social media.

The Sussexes announced Archie's name on their now defunct Sussex Royal Instagram account, alongside an image of the Queen and Prince Philip meeting the newborn for the first time following the family's photo call in the halls of Windsor Castle.

This time around, the couple opted for a website announcement, given they shut down their social media after leaving their royal roles in March 2020.

However, instead of announcing Lili's arrival on the day she was born (as they did with Archie), this time the pair waited almost 48 hours before revealing their happy news.

"It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world. Lili was born on Friday, June 4 at 11:40am (4.40am on Saturday AEST) in the trusted care of the doctors and staff at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA," they said in a statement.

"She weighed 7lb 11oz (3.5kg). Both mother and child are healthy and well, and settling in at home."

Another difference between the two announcements is the confirmation Meghan gave birth in hospital. The couple welcomed Archie at The Portland Hospital in London but the location was not confirmed until his birth certificate was registered.

While fans will have to wait a little longer to get their first glimpse of Lili, this time around the couple confirmed her name at the same time as announcing her birth.

The couple first announced they were expecting their second child on Valentine's Day — echoing Princess Diana's February 14 announcement of her pregnancy with Prince Harry.

The Sussexes then revealed the gender of their new arrival during their controversial Oprah interview, which aired in March.
