Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have welcomed their second child.

The couple announced the birth of their daughter on Sunday (Monday AEST) — more than 24 hours after she was born on Friday, June 4 (Saturday AEST).

In the statement, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their daughter's name to be Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. The little girl will be known as Lili.

Archie's little sister takes her names from her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, whose nickname is Lilibet, and gets her middle name from her late grandmother, Harry's mother Princess Diana.

Lili isn't the first royal to have a middle name honouring "granny Diana" — Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, shares the middle name.

She has the same surname as her big brother, as well as her older cousins, Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn.

Louise and James are the children of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The surname Mountbatten-Windsor pays homage to Prince Philip, who adopted the surname Mountbatten when he joined the Royal Navy.

All children of the House of Windsor who require surnames have taken the combined Mountbatten-Windsor moniker.

The couple welcomed their daughter at 11.40am on Friday (4.40am on Saturday AEST) at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and are now "settling in at home".

This is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's second child, having welcomed son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, now two, in May 2019.
