Prince Harry is 'bored' with his life in California, claims author Tom Quinn

It's been five years since Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex gave up their roles as senior royals and exited the royal family for a life in the idyllic California.

But according to one author, their new life isn't as great as the Duke of Sussex expected.

Tom Quinn, author of Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle and the upcoming Yes Ma'am: The Secret Lives of Royal Servants, spoke about the change to The Sun.

"He just doesn't have anything to do: from childhood he has been trained to be a royal, attending charitable events and meeting the public and he has thrown all that away," said Quinn.

"Friends say he's made a decent stab at helping around the Montecito mansion, walking the dog and looking after the children," he claimed.

"But the truth is he is bored. He can't leave the mansion without a security detail and the couple's neighbours – many of whom are far more famous than the royal couple – take little notice when they spot Harry out and about."

But the royal himself says just the opposite about his new chapter.

Speaking to Andrew Sorkin at The New York Times' Dealbook Summit in December 2024, the 40-year-old confirmed that he intended to stay in the US.

"I very much enjoy living here and bringing up my kids here," he said, "It's a part of my life that I never thought I was going to live, and I feel as though it's the life that my mum wanted for me," he said, speaking of Princess Diana.

The father-of-two claims there are activities he's able to do with his kids - Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three - in LA that they "undoubtedly wouldn't be able to do in the UK" due to security concerns.

"That's a fantastic opportunity, I'm hugely grateful for that," he added.

Harry told the summit his focus is on "being the best husband and the best dad that I can be".
