Netflix issues cryptic statement about Meghan’s acting return: ‘Your guess is as good as anyone’s’

Confusion surrounds the potential return to acting by the Duchess of Sussex as she and Prince Harry prepare to arrive in the UK after six years of living in the US.

Meghan, who quit her acting career when she became engaged to Prince Harry in late 2017, was rumoured to be appearing in the new season of Guy Ritchie’s hit show The Gentlemen.

But those reports were later shut down and insiders suggested conversations between the Duchess of Sussex and Ritchie about a role in his gangster series were leaked to bolster her acting credentials.

Bosses at Netflix, which airs the series, were said to have been in the dark about any potential offer, indicating discussions had taken place between the duchess and Ritchie directly.

Now, the streaming giant has issued a statement about the rumours, leaving more questions than answers.

“Your guess is as good as anyone’s as to what’s coming in the third season,” it said, confirming season three of The Gentlemen would be coming soon.

“All bets are off,” Netflix added.

The statement was later described as “very nuanced” by a source who spoke to The Times.

“It’s tipping a wink to all the chatter. Are they trying to stir it up? If this is PR spin, then it’s genius.”

Ritchie said of the show’s return, “The ambition of The Gentlemen has accelerated, the world has expanded, and the consequences carry weight.

“A third season felt inevitable, and I’m looking forward to pushing the boundaries of it further.”

The new series will begin on the platform on September 3.

Late last week, high-profile journalist Tina Brown claimed Meghan’s offer had been withdrawn after public anger.

“Public backlash was too fierce,” Brown said.

“This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”

Meghan’s return to the UK has been linked to a potential acting role. The duchess starred on US legal drama Suits for seven seasons before her part was written out to allow her to marry Prince Harry and join the royal family.

The late Queen Elizabeth II had told the duchess she was welcome to continue her acting career after the royal wedding, but Meghan chose to support Prince Harry in carrying out royal duties full-time.

However, the couple gave up their places as senior working royals in 2020 to move to the US for a life of financial freedom.

They have since earned money through deals with Netflix and Spotify and the release of Harry’s memoir Spare.

The duke and duchess have also carried out successful tours overseas, including to Australia, Colombia and Nigeria, blending commercial and charity engagements.

Their UK return will see Prince Harry and Meghan remain private citizens who don’t receive any funding from the British taxpayer.
