'Wary': Meghan, Duchess of Sussex's two conditions to reconcile with ailing dad Thomas Markle

Certain conditions will need to be met if Meghan, Duchess of Sussex is to ever reconcile with her ailing dad, according to an expert, but there are reports she has no plans to do so.

Meghan has been estranged from her father Thomas Markle, who is currently recovering from an emergency leg amputation, since 2018 when he was caught staging paparazzi photos in the lead up to Meghan's wedding to Prince Harry.

After news of her father's emergency hospitalisation, it emerged that Meghan had written a letter to be delivered to her father's bedside but one royal expert believes it may be the extent of their contact unless she can be sure of two things.

"At the moment, it seems unlikely that Meghan is about to jump on a plane," former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told The Mirror of the duchess' likelihood to visit her father where he lives in Cebu, Philippines.

"She will also be wary because it seems that her father and brother (Thomas Markle Jr.) are intent on giving their side of the story.

"So there would have to be a lot of trust and reassurance before any meeting."

If trust and reassurance aren't reached, Bond is doubtful that Meghan will ever reconnect with her father.

Meanwhile, The Sunday Times has reported that the duchess has no intention to see her father again, claiming that she "has given up hope of ever reconciling" with him.

Her recent letter aside, Meghan has not spoken to her father in over seven years. It is understood she deleted his number after her wedding.

Markle has not met Prince Harry or the couple's two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

Markle was rushed to hospital after falling ill at his home in the Philippines, according to his son Thomas Markle Jr.

He proceeded to undergo a three-hour operation to remove his left foot and lower leg after a blood clot complication.

While Meghan's typed letter was delivered to her father's bedside after his surgery, it was reported that she was unwilling to speak to her father on the phone, with fears that their conversation may be overheard and reported on.

Markle has made several interviews with a British publication since his emergency hospitalisation.

"I don't want to die estranged from Meghan. I want to meet my grandkids and Harry," he told the publication, claiming that Meghan had not called him after his operation.

Meghan's spokesperson later said: "Given that a Daily Mail reporter has remained at her father's bedside throughout, broadcasting each interaction and breaching clear ethical boundaries, it has been exceedingly difficult for the duchess to contact her father privately, despite her efforts over the past several days.

"With the support of reliable and trusted contacts, her correspondence is now safely in his hands," they added, explaining that time zone differences and logistics caused a delay in sending the letter.

"Families are complicated. None of us truly knows what has gone on between Meghan and her father but it is a very sad situation when a daughter cannot simply pick up the phone to her dad," Bond added of the situation.
