King Frederik gets new stamp in three countries after taking Danish throne

New stamps will be released in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands to celebrate "the change on the throne", the Danish royal household announced on Tuesday.

King Frederik is featured solo wearing his military uniform on the stamp but it's not known if a second one featuring Australian-born Queen Mary will be released.

The regal shot appears to have been taken at the same time as the royal couple's official gala portraits, which were released last month.

The caption next to the image on social media told fans the picture "was taken by photographer Steen Evald", the same photographer as the gala images.

Then it was "designed by Ella Clausen" to become the stamp we see.

"The stamp also shows the King's initials as well as the name of the country in which the stamp was purchased," the royal household said.

"The stamp can be used for international shipping."

King Frederik took over the throne after his mother Queen Margrethe's shock abdication in January, just two weeks before a low-key ceremony.

At the time, the Danish postal service paid tribute to Her Majesty's 52-year reign in an emotional caption, along with a collage of stamps that had been issued of her over the years.

"No other Danish monarch has been depicted on stamps to such an extent as Queen Margrethe," the post office said.

"It began as early as 1941, when she sat as a very small child on the arm of her mother, then Crown Princess Ingrid.

"Over a period of well over 80 years, no less than 162 copies with a portrait of the Queen have been issued.

"Through the stamps, we have followed the Queen through life's major events, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and as a representative of the UN Women's Year back in 1975.

"In addition, the Queen herself has on several occasions used her artistic skills to design both stamps and Christmas stamps.

"Therefore, a heartfelt thank you to HM Queen Magrethe II for a long and good collaboration."

Queen Margrethe's late husband, Prince Henrik, did feature on stamps across his lifetime, suggesting a separate Queen Mary postage stamp could be released in the near future.
