Queen Mary, King Frederik and Prince Christian seen competing in public running event

The Danish royal family has joined in on the annual Royal Run event in Denmark.

Crown Prince Christian, 18, waved to the crowd as he ran alongside competitors, with parents King Frederik and Queen Mary joining the event.

It was a family affair with Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine also participating.

Mary, 52, Frederik, 55, and Christian began the race separately while Isabella, Vincent and Josephine left the starting line together.

Prince Vincent executed an impressive jump spin when he reached the finish line before he was given his medal of completion.

The Royal Run takes place every spring in Denmark with Mary and Frederik regular participants since its inception in 2018.

At the end of the run, Queen Mary helped hand out medals to those who had completed the run.

Prince Christian was the star of the show, arriving before the race to participate in activities including discus and climbing a tower before being lowered back down.

The royal family also shared a series of snaps earlier in the day before leaving for the event.

Queen Mary shared a photo with the family's two border collies Grace and Coco along with the caption: "My two running buddies are disappointed I'm not allowed to join.

"On the other hand, I'm looking forward to running the Royal Run in Kalundborg."

Her youngest three children shared a photo ahead of the race.

Isabella, 17, and twins Josephine and Vincent, 13, each wore the branded tops with their competition numbers.

Earlier Crown Prince Christian posed next to sign which read Brønderslev.

King Frederik had also uploaded a photo showing him race-ready, along with a caption which read: "In a moment I will start a fantastic Royal Run-day in Fredericia.

"I've been looking forward to it a lot, and again this year the support is incredibly nice from all sides," he continued.

"With over 95,000 registered we have set a record at this year's race. My family and I are looking forward to meeting you in Fredericia, Aarhus, Brønderslev, Kalundborg and Copenhagen/Frederiksberg. Happy Royal Run Day."

A photo of Queen Margrethe, 84, watching the race from home was also shared on Instagram.

The caption read: "Besides the more than 95,000 participants in this year's Royal Run, there are also many spectators.

"Both along the city routes, but also behind the TV screens. One of them is Her Majesty Queen Margrethe, who is watching the exercise party from Fredensborg Castle."

Frederik later posed with his two youngest children and the family pets, sharing the photo along with the caption: "Not so disappointing anymore.... the family is home."
