King Frederik and Queen Mary arrive in Sweden for first state visit since ascending the Danish throne

King Frederik X and Queen Mary have arrived in Sweden for their first state visit as Danish monarchs.

The couple arrived in Stockholm aboard the Danish royal yacht, Danneborg where they were welcomed by Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel.

Their arrival was also heralded by a canon salute and music from Sweden's Royal Guards.

After sailing on a gilded Swedish royal barge to the Royal Palace, they met King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia.

Frederik and Mary were beaming during the visit, with Mary wearing a Mark Kenly Domino Tan dress, with a blue shawl, headpiece and clutch and black heels and gloves, while Frederik wore his military uniform.

They have also attended a Gala dinner hosted by King Carl and Queen Silvia. For the event Mary wore a glistening dress with gold skirt and a sheer top with dazzling floral embroidered design.

She also wore the Danish Ruby Parure tiara and jewellery, the Sash and Star of the Swedish Order of the Seraphim, the Star of the Order of the Elephant and the Ordensportrættet portrait brooch.

In a speech delivered during the dinner, Frederik reflected on Denmark's close ties to Sweden.

"The Scandinavian monarchies are closely connected, and our families come from the same tribe," he said according to a post on the Danish royals' official Instagram.

"My grandmother was born a Swedish princess, and even though she quickly adopted the Danish language, she made me want to understand Swedish. Her voice, regardless of language, was the sound of caring. Sweden has, for as long as I can remember, had a permanent place in my mind and in my heart."

The Danish royals' May 6 to 7 visit to Sweden includes meetings with Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kirstersson as well as a visit to a military facility.

Frederik and Mary also made a visit to Sweden's largest technical university as part of their focus on space exploration and the transition to green energy.

Frederik ascended the Danish thrown on January 14, following his mother Queen Margrethe II's abdication.

It is tradition for Danish royals to travel to other Scandinavian countries first. Their next planned visit is to Oslo in Norway later this month.
