The 'door is always open' for Harry and Meghan, royal author claims

The author of an updated book about King Charles has quoted an official as saying the "door is always open" for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Author Robert Hardman has made the claim in his newly updated book Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story.

It was during a discussion about Charles' temperament, with Hartman explaining the "common media perception" that the monarch and his staff "spend much if not most of their time worrying about how to 'slim down' the monarchy and what to do with the two difficult Dukes" (Prince Harry and Prince Andrew) is incorrect.

He writes about the King's ability to "compartmentalise issues over which he has little control."

"Queen Camilla has also been instrumental in lifting his mood," the author writes.

"The departure of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from royal life in 2020 and their subsequent sensational attacks on the institution, on camera and in print, have hurt," he explains before quoting a "friend" as saying "of course" the King is "extremely sad about Harry and Meghan but there is a sense of exasperation, that he has done what he can and now he is King, there are many more things to think about."

The friend explained Charles has "tried listening" and now he admits he "doesn't know what the problem is" and is just "getting on" with his life.

"Nothing is final, however,' Hardman writes, quoting a "senior official" as saying: "But when your child has decided that, at the moment, they want to do things differently, you have to give them the space to do that."

The official added that the "door is always open, though."

While this is Charles' sentiment, we know less of Prince William's feelings about his younger brother's actions and possible return, although it has been reported he is less forgiving than his father.

As next in line to the British throne, it may be the Prince of Wales who ultimately makes that choice.

It is understood that when it comes to Andrew, father and son are more aligned.

Charles has cut off the Duke of York's "£1 million-a-year" (approx. $1.97 million) allowance in recent weeks, according to the author.

The new chapters of the book quotes a palace insider confirming that "the Duke is no longer a financial burden on the King".
