The earrings Kate Middleton wore after her baby's birth were a sweet royal nod

Kate Middleton paid subtle tribute to a beloved family member as she introduced the new royal baby to the world - through her choice of earrings.
 
The diamond and pearl drop earrings worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, 36, on the steps of St Mary’s Hospital on Monday reportedly belong to none other than Queen Elizabeth II.

Fans quickly noticed the Duchess’ bespoke Jenny Packham dress - a sleeved red shift with a white lace Peter Pan collar - looked rather similar to one worn by her late mother-in-law. 
 
When Princess Diana exited St Mary’s Hospital with newborn Prince Harry in 1984, she too wore a red sleeved outfit with a white collar (and a distinctly more ‘80s vibe).

Perhaps the most notable is the stunning Cartier ‘halo’ tiara she wore when she married Prince William seven years ago.
 
The piece was passed to Her Majesty on her 18th birthday by the Queen Mother, who herself received it as a gift from King George V before his ascension to the throne.
