Kate Middleton has paid tribute to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, with the dress she wore for her first appearance following the birth of the third royal baby.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 36, stepped out of the Lindo Wing, at St Mary's Hospital in London, wearing a vibrant red shift dress with a white collar.

The frock is strikingly similar to the one worn by the Princess of Wales after giving birth to Prince Harry in September, 1984.

Princess Diana delivered both her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, at the same hospital where Kate has had all three of her children.

The dress chosen for Kate's first post-baby appearance was a bespoke creation by Jenny Packham.

It featured a white lace Peter Pan collar, bearing a resemblance to the collar on Diana's red dress.

She wore pearl and diamond drop earrings, while her hair was styled in its signature glossy blow-dry by hairdresser Amanda Cook Tucker, who was seen outside the hospital moments before Kate's appearance on the steps.

Ms Cook Tucker has styled the Duchess's hair after the births of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

It's not the first time Kate has paid tribute to Prince William's mother through fashion.

For her first appearance after the birth of Prince George in 2013, Kate wore a polka dot blue and white dress.

For Kate's photo-call today, her dress also had a patriotic flair.

The red and white frock was a nod to St George's Day – England's national day - featuring the colours of the English flag.

The date – April 23 – marks the death of St George, England's patron saint.

A fitting birthdate for the newest member of the royal family and fifth-in-line to the throne.
