Danish royal Count Nikolai shares milestone with mother, brother

Queen Mary's nephew Count Nikolai of Monpezat has attended his graduation from business school, posing for photos with family and friends.

"Five years at university and I can finally call myself cand.merc," Nikolai, 24, shared.

The royal completed his studies at Copenhagen Business School in 2023 with a Master of Science in Merchandising degree.

This week was his official graduation ceremony.

Celebrating alongside him was his mother Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, the first wife of Prince Joachim – who is King Frederik's brother – and as his brother Count Felix, 21.

Nikolai posed for photos with family and friends before one final picture of him walking out of the business school.

The final photo shared by the royal is from a celebratory lunch.

Nikolai was born a prince and is the eldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe.

His parents, Prince Joachim and Alexandra divorced in 2005. He is currently sixth in the line of succession.

Joachim, 55, remarried in 2008, to Marie Cavallier. The couple has two children, Count Nikolai's half-siblings, Count Henrik and Countess Athena.

Count Nikolai also works as a model and is currently signed to Sight Management Studio.

In 2023, Prince Joachim's four children lost their prince and princess titles and His/Her Highness stylings by decree of Queen Margrethe.

The decision was meet with surprise by royal followers and during an exclusive interview with 9honey Royal Reporter Natalie Oliveri, Nikolai admitted it was still "quite a touchy subject."

"I mean, I am the same person as I've always been," he said at the time.

"It's more just a formality or sort of change of belonging, in a way."

Admitting it's "hard to describe, especially in English", Nikolai says: "I am the same person I have always been, it's weird having to settle for another surname now.

"Or another… not surname, another a call sign."

At the time Queen Margrethe, 83, said the decision was made so Prince Joachim's children would be "able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by" their royal titles.

The monarch later issued an apology for causing her family any distress, admitting she "underestimated" how much they would "feel affected" after Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Count Nikolai expressed their hurt and surprise to Danish media.

Nikolai and girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup spent some time living in Sydney during his studies.

Since completing his studies the couple has shared photos showing their travels.
