'Sorry to interrupt': King Felipe of Spain surprised by daughters at 10th anniversary commemoration of his reign

King Felipe VI of Spain has received a delightful surprise during commemorations for the 10th anniversary of his proclamation.

During formal proceedings, his daughters Princess Leonor, 18, and Infanta Sofia, 17, took to the stage.

Princess Leonor acknowledged King Felipe, 56, and Queen Letizia, 51, when she started off the surprise with, "Mama, Papa, majesties."

Infanta Sofia then began a toast.

"Sorry to interrupt, but we also have something to say today.

"Thank you for joining us in remembering that in these 10 years, we have learnt from our parents what the commitment that the four of us have with all Spaniards means."

Leonor continued, "Now I would like you to join us in a toast to our mother and father, to our Kings.

"Because since we were born, we have been taught the value of this institution, of the Crown, its usefulness to our society and its purpose of serving everyone."

Spain's royal family arrived at Zarzuela Palace for the commemoration led by King Felipe, who wore a dark day suit with purple tie.

Queen Letizia chose a striking blue dress. Princess Sophia wore a red suit and Infanta Sofia wore a black top with pink design and matching black pants.

Following the formalities, the royal family stood on the balcony of the palace to wave to the assembled crowd.

The Guards of the Madrid City Hall assembled in the Plaza de la Villa.

The "Patrulla Aguila" (Eagle Patrol) flew over the royal palace in plumes of red and yellow during the solemn release of the royal guard, much to the delight of the crowd.

Later, the King attended the award ceremony of the Order of Civil Merit, where a number of citizens were decorated in recognition of their personal commitment and social contribution.

The ceremony was attended by the main powers of the state, including the presidents of the government, the congress of deputies and the senate, who later posed for a group photo.

Felipe ascended the throne on June 14, 2014 when his father, King Juan Carlos, abdicated following 39 years as monarch.
