Danish royal Count Nikolai posts photos from New Zealand trip

Danish royal Count Nikolai has shared photos from a recent trip to New Zealand with his long-time girlfriend, Benedikte Thoustrup.

"Forgot about these pictures from NZ and it makes me miss this beautiful place," Nikolai, 24, shared on social media.

The royal posted eight photos from their trip, including poses at New Zealand's scenic outdoors.

The jet-setting couple were most recently in Paris, with both sharing photos of their international adventures.

It is understood Nikolai has returned to Denmark to complete his university studies.

Count Nikolai, born Prince Nikolai of Denmark, is the eldest son of Prince Joachim and his first wife Alexandra, the Countess of Frederiksborg.

He is the eldest grandchild of Queen Magrethe and the nephew of Australian-born Queen Mary.

Nikolai has gained a profile for his successful modelling career, which has seen him walk London Fashion Week for Burberry and Paris Fashion Week for Dior.

He spent some time living in Sydney in 2023, arriving in early August to complete a semester at the University of Technology (UTS) in Ultimo, studying a masters in business economics at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS).

He and girlfriend Thoustrup settled in Surry Hills for the semester.

Nikolai told 9honey at the time, "I like the scenery, the people are nice, the weather is good, I've been told, for winter. It's so similar to a Danish summer, just not as wet."

He said they also had plans to visit "Uluru, Melbourne and perhaps Tasmania, and then all of the east coast."

Queen Mary's family resides in Tasmania. He also said they had plans to explore New Zealand in a campervan.

Count Nikolai and his three siblings were stripped of their royal titles by Queen Margrethe in 2022, taking him from prince to count.

At the time, Queen Margrethe, 83, said the decision was made so Prince Joachim's children would be "able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by" their royal titles.

The monarch later issued an apology for causing her family any distress, admitting she "underestimated" how much they would "feel affected" after Prince Joachim, Princess Marie and Count Nikolai expressed their hurt and surprise to Danish media.

Queen Margrethe abdicated from the Danish throne in January 2024, paving the way for her son Frederik to become king and Mary to be named queen.
