Rose McGowan breaks silence on Harvey Weinstein rape allegations

In her first public appearance since accusing Harvey Weinstein of rape, Rose McGowan has claimed she was “silenced for 20 years” before emphatically declaring the time for change has come: "No more".

With a raised fist, McGowan, who delivered the impassioned speech during the Women’s Convention in Detroit on Friday morning, assured the audience that despite her stardom, her story mirrored all of theirs.

“I have been slut-shamed. I have been harassed. I’ve been maligned. And you know what? I’m just like you,” McGowan told those at the event, who she at one point referred to as "me toos".

“Because what happened to me behind the scenes, happens to all of us in this society. And that cannot stand, it will not stand.”

The 44-year-old Charmed alum has been at the forefront of the allegations against the disgraced Hollywood producer. First, when the New York Times reported she had reached a $100,000 settlement with him in 1997 “after an episode in a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival”.

She later publicly alleged on Twitter Weinstein had raped her, which he has denied.

McGowan has also been urging others to call out sexual harassment and assault on Twitter, using the hashtag #RoseArmy.

On Friday morning, she said this campaign was about establishing “one massive collective voice”.

“It’s about all of us being roses in our own life. Not me, but the actual flower because we have thorns, and our thorns carry justice. And our thorns carry consequence.”

She also promised, “No more will be shunted to the side. No more will be hurt. It’s time to be whole. It’s time to rise. It’s time to be brave.”

McGowan explained “we are given one view” in a male-dominated Hollywood but that, rather than being an isolated industry, “it is the mirror you are given to look into”.

“I know the men behind that view. They shouldn’t be in your mind and they shouldn’t be in my mind. It’s time to clean house,” she added.

She also urged the “scarlet letter is theirs — it is not ours. We are pure. We are strong. We are brave and we will fight.”

“P-----s grab back. Women grab back. We speak. We yell. We march,” she declared. “We are here. We will not go away.”

Weinstein is being investigated by Los Angeles and New York police over a myriad of sexual harassment and assault allegations.

On Thursday, he sued his former company for access to emails that he says would “exonerate him” over claims of sexual abuse.
