Brooke Bellamy of Brooki Bakehouse breaks silence one year after RecipeTin Eats 'plagiarism' controversy

Brooke Bellamy, the face behind Brooki Bakehouse, has spoken out about the 'plagiarism' scandal involving Nagi Maehashi of RecipeTin Eats one year on.

The drama emerged after two recipes from Bellamy's then-new cookbook, Bake With Brooki – the caramel slice and baklava – appeared very similar to Maehashi's own, according to the RecipeTin Eats founder.

Amid the drama, the Bake with Brooki author made the choice to stay silent.

"I've come to peace with the terms that on the internet people can say whatever they want about you, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's true," she said on The Balance Theory Podcast.

"As a human being… your integrity is everything that you have, so when someone questions that, you can really take it on board."

Bellamy, who was three months pregnant at the time, said it was difficult to remain silent, but managed to do so until the controversy blew over.

"I am the sum of my actions, not of my words," she said.

"So, in that moment, I chose very deliberately not to react and not to add to this narrative of, 'She said, she said'… pitting two women against each other."

She also realised that her desire to defend herself publicly stemmed from her own ego.

"Your integrity is questioned and also the only thing to gain there out of adding to that noise… is probably protecting your own ego," she said.

"Everyone around me knows me. Everyone in my community knows me. I've worked really hard to be here. So, I think you just have to decide – am I adding any value by adding noise? Or am I just adding noise?"

The issue at hand arose last April, with Bellamy denying all allegations that she copied Maehashi's recipes for the caramel slice and baklava and saying that her recipes were the result of "countless hours" of baking experience.

Penguin, the publisher of Bellamy's cookbook, also refuted the claims, stating that the recipes were her own.

Maehashi spoke out at the time to "remind influencers and publishers that stealing work is not okay," while also urging followers to refrain from attacking Bellamy.

Bellamy first became known when she opened her Brisbane bakery, Brooki Bakehouse in 2022, with her day-in-the-life videos catapulting her to social media fame.

Maehashi launched her food blog RecipeTin Eats in 2014 and has since built a following, becoming a cookbook author and featuring in media as a highly-regarded cook.
