RecipeTin Eats founder Nagi Maehashi 'cried a thousand tears' after admitting beloved dog Dozer to ICU

It's a sad day for fans of food blog RecipeTin Eats following a devastating announcement from the site's founder.

The Japanese-born Aussie behind RTE, Nagi Maehashi, has shared a gut-wrenching update on her beloved dog Dozer – revealing the precious pup has reached his "final chapter".

Maehashi's golden retriever companion has been a frequent fixture across RecipeTin Eats' social media, online blog and cook books, adored by readers and followers alike.

In a video shared by Maehashi from the Veterinary ICU at SASH Animal Hospital, Dozer was shown hooked up to various tubes and medical equipment.

"My sweet boy has been fighting hard, but the gut-wrenching truth is that we are in the final chapter of Life of Dozer," the food blogger announced to her 1.7 million-strong Instagram following.

"His story only has one ending, but my greatest hope is that before we get to the final page, he can spend some time at home."

The chef and author then announced she'd be stepping back from RecipeTin Eats for a time to focus her full attention on being at her furry friend's side in his final days.

Maehashi went on to assure followers Dozer would receive "all the neck rubs in the world" as well as "all the hugs, all the kisses, all the pats" during this time.

She revealed that in her absence, RecipeTin Eats would be manned by fellow chef Jean-Baptiste Alexandre, along with Maehashi's brother Goh.

"JB will be sharing new recipes while I'm away – it's been surreal sampling them in ICU with machines beeping in my ear."

"Thank you for all the years of love you've shown Dozer, for sharing your own fur baby stories, and for making him feel so deeply adored far beyond our little world."

In an accompanying blog post, Maehashi revealed Dozer had previously been admitted to SASH for a double lung infection.

"If he was a spritely young chap, it probably wouldn't be a big deal. But he's 13.9 years old, with other medical conditions, and with that comes the reality that is the circle of life," she said.

Maehashi's blog, in which Dozer has been a frequent feature over the years, first began when she left her job in finance to pursue her passion for food.

Maehashi had worked in the corporate world for 16 years, taking a major leap of faith by leaving everything she knew behind to kickstart her passion project.

Today, she's accumulated over 1.7 million followers on Instagram, along with over 500 million annual views on her blog, and has made a name for herself as the founder of RecipeTin Eats.

Last year, Maehashi made headlines after alleging social media creator Brooke Bellamy, more widely known by business name Brooki Bakehouse, had plagiarised her work.

In a lengthy RecipeTin blog post, she accused Bellamy of copying a number of her recipes word-for-word in 2025 release Bake with Brooki, which generated over $4.6 million in book sales.

Responding to Maehashi's claims, Bellamy said in a statement, "I did not plagiarise any recipes in my book which consists of 100 recipes I have created over many years", adding, "I have been creating my recipes and selling them commercially since October 2016."

She also claimed to have evidence she'd been cooking these recipes since before Maehashi first published hers.
