'Our little squish': Olympic surfer Carissa Moore, who competed while pregnant at Paris 2024, welcomes first child

An Olympic surfer, who competed while pregnant at Paris 2024, has announced the arrival of her first child.

United States athlete Carissa Moore, who made history when she became the first woman to win an Olympic gold medal for the sport when it debuted at Tokyo 2020, took to Instagram to announce the birth.

"Our little squish is here. Olena Lililehua Untermann born 24/2//25 at 3.39am," she wrote alongside two photos of her newborn daughter.

Moore, 32, was born in Hawaii. Her father, a competitive open water swimmer, introduced her to surfing at the famed Waikiki Beach when she was five.

By 11, she was winning junior surf competitions and at 16, she became the youngest person to win the Reef Hawaiian Pro.

After turning professional at 18, she became the youngest person to win a world surfing title.

The five-time world champion took home the first ever Olympic women's surfing gold medal in 2021.

Moore, who married her high school sweetheart, Luke Untermann, in December 2017, qualified for the US team that competed in the Paris 2024 surfing event held in Tahiti, French Polynesia, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

She announced her pregnancy days later in a post on Instagram, which included a photo of her caressing her baby bump.

"Surfing is already feeling a little different pregnant but so stoked to be in the water, riding waves and still pushing a few turns," she wrote.

"Embracing the challenge of figuring out this new pace and approach for a little while."

She continued to surf and even compete throughout her pregnancy, and shared photos of her growing bump with fans.

She previously told People she couldn't wait to one day tell her daughter "she was in the barrel with me at the Olympics," and planned to introduce her daughter to surfing one day.

"I think probably start off with some swimming first," she said.

"I think my dad got us in the water after a couple months, so as soon as possible, really."
