'What type of year am I in for?': Office worker taken aback by note left in tearoom

An office worker in the UK has been left startled by a note left in their workplace tearoom by their employer.

"Got back to work today, management have put this up in the tea room. What type of year am I in for?" they wrote on Reddit's 'Casual UK' thread.

The note, which has been carefully typed out and laminated, begins with the title: "What makes us a team?"

"This is not a job, this is a vocation," the body of the note begins, before it lists the "attributes which make us a great team."

These include doing "a lot of extra work on our own time" and always volunteering to "attend events held".

"We do it for the love not the money," the note continues before stating employees should "look forward to coming to work everyday."

"We class ourselves as a family – not just colleagues," it continues, adding that employees should want to "come to work even when we are un-well as we understand the impact it has on our teammates."

The note ends by stating: "We do not moan about our aches and pains – that's life."

It also includes a graphic of the platitude: "Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion."

Redditors were quick to critique the note, with many commenting on the suggestion to come into work sick.

"Absolutely. If I cough and splutter around the place for a bit I can inflict the same flu misery on those f--kers too," they said.

"Indeed, its pretty well known that pressuring staff who are ill to come in and work anyway just infects more staff and thus more days are lost to sickness. But some companies just don't understand that," another agrees.

One Redditor suggested the employee "run" before another added "pause for a moment to deface the poster."

One commented suggested saying they were "family" is "the absolute ultimate work red flag."

"Most toxic list ever," another said.

"The emotional blackmail in that one is off the charts," added another.

One person said they were "low-level fuming, having read that".

"Take it down," one commenter said before another suggested drawing in a poll asking if workers "agree" or "disagree" with the list.

"The level of effort that went into making that inspirational poster is truly pitiful," one sympathetic Redditor commented.

"Put one up next to but with what a list of what an employee expects from a good employer," another said.
