Tools down: Neighbour's passive-aggressive note sparks debate over 7am habit

To "love thy neighbour" is one of mankind's most enduring principles – but that directive may not have accounted for thy neighbour's use of power tools in the early mornings.

One Sydneysider's neighbourly patience appears to have finally run out, taking aim at the power tool-wielding culprit in scathing fashion.

Judging by the colourful message scrawled on a piece of paper and left for all to see, not all was good in the complainant's hood – and their move has left some divided.

"ILLEGALLY DUMPED by the c--t who uses power tools at 7am," the post-it note read, having presumably once been placed on a pile of belongings left on the street for collection.

Residential noise restrictions are in place between 8pm and 8am on weekends and public holidays in New South Wales, while DIY-ers can get their power tool fix from 7am onwards every other weekday.

We asked the Nine.com.au team their thoughts on this contentious issue – and opinions were mixed.

While the note did not specify whether the culprit had been heard whipping out the tools at 7am on a weekend, respondents where quick to condemn this move.

"7am is definitely too early on a weekend, that’s just criminal. On a weekday I think it’s okay given most people are getting ready for work and awake already," Mikala said, with Kahla adding that "9am feels more reasonable."

Lauren, while agreeing weekend mornings should be noise-free, said the disgruntled neighbour's approach to the issue had not been appropriate.

"I would fire up all my power tools at 7am every day out of spite if I got a note like that. You're entitled to be a bit annoyed, but not to be that rude."

Meanwhile, Nicole was on a completely different page, both condemning the rude response and defending the neighbour's use of power tools in the early hours.

"A passive-aggressive note for everyone to see is outrageous, slip a polite one under the door and call it a day. Also wake up at a normal hour and you'll be fine," she sagely advised.

One other respondent, Maddison, went as far as suggesting the noise restrictions in place for power tools should also be applied to over-excited children.

"I hate to be that person, but I think the rules should also apply to loud kids outside on weekend mornings," she said.

"My old neighbours used to let their kid go mental in the backyard from about 6am on weekends – drove me insane."
