My husband wants me to get a new car, but I just can't

Yes it is 2017, and no, my husband isn't my 'sugar daddy'.

All of the money we earn is our money and as we earn more and more (after losing everything in a business bankruptcy in 2008) we suddenly find ourselves with options.

Bigger house?

New car?

Family holiday?

I thought it would be exciting, to be able to get a new car, but now that my husband has one and wants to replace mine, I find myself feeling sad, and panicked.

Listen to the latest episode of Super Mums with Mel, Kel and Leila McKinnon:

Firstly, my car is like a member of my family. My three children and I have spent countless hours in my little Hyundai Tuscon.

I've had it for over a decade.

It's like saying goodbye to a beloved family member, and I just don't want to do it.

Even though it's falling apart. Every time I get it cleaned bits and pieces fall off.

A couple of years ago the engine blew up (thanks to a dodgy mechanic who hadn't replaced the timing belt properly) and we had to replace the whole thing.

It's been through the wars with us.

Secondly, new cars are a bit scary.

My husband's new car doesn't even need a key to turn it on. He presses a button.

There are screens, and wifi, and cameras and beeping noises and I'd be too scared to even try and drive it, let alone try and park it somewhere.

Are they cars or space ships?

And another thing.

It seems like a waste of money.

After having been through severe financial difficulty, the thought of dropping that much money on something that begins to depreciate in value the second you drive it off the lot seems nuts.

If forced, I'd happily buy the exact same car I have now in the exact same colour.

But it's not available anymore.

I bought my gold Hyundai Tuscon in 2005 after becoming obsessed with an Australian reality TV show called My Restaurant Rules. My favourite couple on the show - Bella and Evan who opened Pink Salt in Manly in Sydney - were in an ad for the Hyundai Tuscon, so when I needed a bigger car to accommodate our growing family, that's the one I chose.

I didn't even care what colour it was.

We got the gold one cheaper because it was already on the lot.

Done and done.

My husband's new car is gigantic. Unnecessarily so.

We only have three kids.

Still, it's what he wanted.

It's also technically blue, but it looks black.

It's so dark blue it's practically black. My kids call it 'bluck', as in blue and dark black. And it's the biggest 4WD I've ever seen.

And all those buttons and screens and gadgets and technical advancements.

Oh gosh, now I'm sounding really old.

I plan to drive my car until it dies or simply falls to pieces.

I'll only replaced my beloved 'mummy mobile' when forced.
