A mum has been left fuming after her husband practically stole their son's birthday gift from him and is refusing to give it back.

In fact, the issue has become so serious that she has had to ban her husband from using the toy, causing a huge argument.

The mum, who is at her wit's end, bought her 13-year-old son a new Xbox for his birthday last month, using her own money because her husband didn't approve of the "useless" gaming console.

But his tone changed pretty quickly when their son showed him how to use the Xbox.

"First he'd play with our son but now has completely taken over and won't even let our son play with it even for a few hours," the mum wrote.

Her husband's behaviour quickly escalated, and he will now spend hours playing every night, gaming until as early as 6am before sleeping until midday.

He's also started buying new games for the console and ignoring their children to play, telling them he's "too busy" to help them with homework or spend time with them.

What's more, he's started yelling and cursing at the games in front of their children, even though he's the only one playing.

And recently he even started calling in sick to work so he could play games, or lying to family members to avoid them so he can focus on the Xbox.

Now the console has completely taken over her husband's life, the mum is at a loss for what to do – especially since it was a gift intended for her son.

But the final straw came when he moved the Xbox out of the living room and into their kids' room so he can "focus" on gaming.

"Last night my daughter came to me wanting to sleep with me saying she couldn't sleep because her dad was in their room and yelling all night," the poor mum wrote.

"I was so mad at him especially after I told him to stop because the kids couldn't sleep because of the noise. He kept saying 'give me a few minutes' until it was 1:30am.

"I had enough at this point and I unplugged the Xbox and told him he was no longer allowed to do this in the kids room when the kids need to sleep so they could concentrate on school."

Despite the husband clearly being in the wrong for disrupting their kids' sleep over a video game, he "blew up" at his wife for ruining the game he was in the middle of.

He also accused her of "making him miserable" and argued that his wife had no right to kick him out of his kids room, branding her "controlling".

Fed up with the situation, the poor mum appealed for advice online and was flooded with messages urging her to stand her ground and put a stop to her husband's shocking behaviour.

Several people suggested her husband seek professional advice for his possible gaming addiction, while others slammed him as an "awful dad" for stealing his son's birthday present.

Others warned the woman that she had let the issue go too far already, as it was clearly affecting her kids' home life.

But one summed the situation up with a single, blunt sentence: "Tell him the Xbox goes or you do – then you'll find out his priorities real quick."
