UK politician's wife dumps him on Twitter minutes after guilty verdict for sexual assault

A woman has dumped her politician husband on Twitter just minutes after he was found guilty of sexual assault.

Former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke has been found guilty of three sex attacks on women, the first of which is alleged to have happened while his wife was away from their home in Belgravia, central London.

The court heard Elphicke invited the victim, aged in her early 30s, to his family townhouse in 2007 where he groped her breasts and chased her around his kitchen, saying: "I'm a naughty Tory."

The second and third attacks happened nine years later when Elphicke is alleged to have assaulted a young parliamentary worker who was aged in her early 20s.

The court heard he shoved his hand own her top, grabbed her breasts and then told her "not to blab".

At first she stood by her husband, arriving hand-in-hand with her husband on the first day of the trial. She told jurors she was supporting her husband as they attempted to repair their marriage.

His former wife, Natalie Elphicke, posted on Twitter: "Today's verdict is one that brings profound sorrow. It ends my 25-year marriage to the only man I have ever loved.

"I would ask for some personal space and time to come to terms with the shocking events of the last three years. I will not be commenting further."

The tweet was posted just minutes after the guilty verdict was announced.

Natalie took over as Dover MP in 2019 succeeded her husband after he stood down having served from 2010 and 2019.

Elphicke cried during evidence and hung his head when the guilty verdict was read. He will be sentenced on September 15.
