Aldi hasn't always been known for its fruit and vegetable range, but the discount grocery retailer has come so far.

For the fifth year in a row, shoppers have awarded Aldi the Most Satisfied Customers Award for Supermarket Fruit and Vegetables, awarding a top rating of five stars for overall satisfaction as well as for value for money, freshness of produce, and variety.

Customers rated all the supermarkets included in the ratings five stars for variety, while only IGA received the top rating for presentation of the fruit and vegetables section.

CanstarBlue.com.au spokesperson, Eden Radford, said in a statement: "Aldi has consistently earned top ratings from customers on overall satisfaction when it comes to fresh produce, an impressive feat that awarded the supermarket the Most Satisfied Customer Award for Supermarket Fruit and Vegetables for five consecutive years.

"Shoppers have also consistently rated Aldi five stars for value for money, and freshness of produce, proving the supermarket really is Aussies' pick of the bunch for buying fruit and vegetables."

Group Buying Director of Fruit and Vegetables at Aldi, Matt Atley, tells nine.com.au: "At Aldi, we're all about bringing our customers the freshest, best-quality fruit and veggies without breaking the bank.

"Being crowned number one by Aussie shoppers for the fifth year running in Canstar's awards is a real win for us and shows that we are good different.

"Taking the top spot in value, variety, and freshness shows we're delivering on our promise every day, with 97 per cent of our fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from local Aussie growers."

The award, determined by a survey of over 2,800 customers, also revealed Aussies are spending more on fruit and vegetables despite the majority of shoppers trying different tactics to keep costs down.

Spending per week on fruit and vegetables is now an average of $49 per week, up from $39 the previous year.

This has been attributed to several factors, including shifting shopper preferences for fresh produce, as well as extreme weather events that have impacted supply and prices.

Generations also spend differently, with millennials buying the most fruit and vegetables each week.

Millennials spend the most, at $56 per week, followed by Gen Z, at $53 per week.

Other generations spend $38 per week.

It may be a preference for organic fruit and vegetables that explains the younger generations weekly fruit and vegetable spend, with the survey showing 12 per cent of Gen Z and 10 per cent of millennial buyers are more willing to pay a higher price for organic fruit and vegetables.

And most shoppers (87 per cent) say they try and save where they can.

Over two-fifths (44 per cent) only buy what's affordable – not what they actually want to eat.

One-third (33 per cent) buy the 'ugly' produce. 30 per cent purchase more frozen, rather than fresh, fruit and vegetables.

Radford said: "Taking a few moments to compare options and varieties, and considering cheaper or even frozen alternatives, could do the trick to help keep costs down.

"However, for some shoppers, paying a bit more at the checkout for organic produce is something they are more than willing to do, with Canstar's data showing that's more likely with younger generations."

This latest news comes as Aldi and DoorDash expanded their grocery delivery service nationwide.

This followed a successful trial in Canberra earlier this year.
