How much food $50 will get you at Costco, Aldi and The Reject Shop

When it comes to bang for your buck, it can be hard to figure out which discount grocery retailers will deliver.

Each has their own special charms, and with the right planning, you can take advantage of each of them when the time is right, saving you money over all.

We've checked out three of Australia's favourite discount grocery retailers with $50 in hand at each to see exactly what we could get.

The results may surprise you.

Costco

Costo specialises in selling in bulk so while the variety of items doesn't seem impressive, what $50 bought there certainly is.

Take the ground beef which was selling in bulk and can be portioned out and placed in the freezer. Then there's the 30-pack of free range eggs for $7.99. Omelette anyone?

Here's what we took home:

Aldi

At Aldi there was more variety on offer. Aldi is more about reduced prices overall rather than bulk selling. With $50 we were able to purchase a wide variety of items to see a family through a week or two.

These are:

Bananas 1.36 kilos $2.49 per kilo = $3.41

Free range eggs 12 pack $4.49

While sliced bread $0.99

Ocean Rise Italian style tuna $0.99 = $3.96

The Reject Shop

At The Reject Shop you can get great deals on non-perishable items including Green's cake mix at $2 and Lipton Tea for $4 as well as the Tesco range of products from the UK. What you can't get is fresh produce or fridge or refrigerator items.

For $50 we took home:

Costco is great for buying in bulk which may suit a fortnightly or monthly visit. It's worth heading to Costco first and picking up anything you may need in bulk because they don't have a wide variety but what they do have is affordable.

Sometimes they are clearing items, such as the bananas I purchased which were marked at $2.99 a kilo but I was only charged $1 for at the check out!

Then it's worth heading over to Aldi and buying whatever else your family needs. Aldi does tend to run out of bargain items from time to time which is when you can pop into Coles, Woolies or IGA, just for an item or two, that you really need.

Then, with any money left over from saving at Costco and Aldi, you can head over to The Reject Shop and do a little stock piling. Fill your cupboards up with pasta, noodles, cup-a-soups and snacks.
