Melania Trump has hinted at what she will wear for husband Donald Trump's presidential inauguration on Monday (Tuesday morning Australia).

On Sunday, the 54-year-old former and future First Lady made it clear fashion will still play a key role during her second stint in the White House.

Hours before her husband hosted a victory rally, Melania stepped out for a wreath-laying event in a black Dior coat, knee-high Christian Louboutin boots and black leather gloves.

She didn't appear at his rally that evening, but the world can already take a few hints about her inauguration outfit – and her White House wardrobe in general – from her brief outing on Sunday.

Style strategist Lauren A. Rothman predicted Melania will continue to wear designer labels and use fashion to send a message during her husband's second term in office, but suggested her approach may be different than it was in 2016.

"I do think some rules are going to be rewritten, and I think that she is taking advantage of that in a positive way, to rewrite her own script of how she shows up," Rothman told USA TODAY.

"That may include more looks of the moving mum, getting her kid through college and continuing to protect his privacy, and not always doing that in a skirt suit."

She added that fashion allows Melania to communicate without giving speeches or making public statements, which seems to be more true now than ever before.

The former and future First Lady has made it clear she intends to play a smaller public role in her husband's second term as President, so her style will play an even more important role in her public perception.

"We don't hear a ton from her [but] we see her, we process her verbal communication cues," Rothman said.

Some American fashion lovers are thrilled to see Melania back in the spotlight for that very reason, a handful even likening her to fashion icon First Lady Jackie O Kennedy.

"I would say she's on par with Jackie O. And she has incredible style," Jayme Franklin, the founder and CEO of conservative platform Conservateur.

Not everyone feels that way, however, with major designers like Marc Jacobs announcing they had no interest in dressing Melania or being seen as supporting her husband's politics.
