Woman wins $10 million after 'some rude person' bumped into her while buying a scratchie

It was a scratchie switch serendipity that's won one Los Angeles woman $10 million.

LaQuedra Edwards was buying $40 worth of scratchies from a vending machine at Vons Supermarket in Tarzana Square, Los Angeles when she clicked the wrong button after "some rude person" bumped into her.

"He just bumped into me, didn't say a thing and just walked out the door," Edwards told CA Lottery this week of the incident in November last year.

As a result, Edwards wound up with a $30 200X Scratchers instead, which at first really annoyed her because most of her money went on the single ticket.

The Californian woman had been trying to buy multiple cheaper items, in the hopes of increasing her chances of winning something back.

When she got back to her car and started scratching her impulse purchase the annoyed feeling soon turned to sheer disbelief when she wound up with the top prize.

"I didn't really believe it at first, but I got on the 405 freeway and kept looking down at [the ticket], and I almost crashed my car," Edwards joked.

"I pulled over, looked at it again and again, scanned it with my [CA Lottery] app, and I just kept thinking this can't be right," she added.

Five months on and Edwards admits it's still sinking in that she's a millionaire.

"I'm still in shock," she said, recalling: "All I remember saying once I found out how much I just won was, 'I'm rich!'"

Edwards is going to use her winnings to buy a house and start a non-profit organisation, she told the lottery agency.
