Mum who stabbed her daughter's alleged rapists won't be charged

A South African mother who killed a man and injured two after allegedly finding them raping her daughter has had charges dropped against her.

The Eastern Cape woman stabbed the men repeatedly with a kitchen knife on September 2, believing they were gang raping her 27-year-old daughter.

One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were left with severe injuries.

A teenage relative of the man who died reportedly told the woman her daughter was in danger. She told the Daily Dispatch she called the police but there was no answer, so she picked up the knife and went to find her child.

Members of the public rallied behind the 56-year-old - nicknamed ‘Lion Mama’ - when she was arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder.

A campaign was launched to crowdfund her legal fees, and two lawyers offered to defend her free of charge.

On Sunday, the National Prosecuting Authority announced its decision to withdraw the charges against the woman.
