Jessica Mulroney has 'found hope' in year since racism scandal: 'I don't blame anyone'

One year on from the controversy that saw her dropped from various projects, Jessica Mulroney says her life is "happy again".

The Canadian stylist, whose friendship with Meghan Markle has brought her even more into the public spotlight, says she's "found hope" through sobriety and therapy.

"I've spoken about mental illness for years. I've worked very hard my whole life but never thought I'd have to go through intense treatment the way I did this year," Mulroney writes in an Instagram post.

"I don't blame anyone, any company who erased me without an investigation or what the press made me go through. Just consistently working on myself. All the pain is now in the past."

The stylist is referring to the June 2020 controversy in which she was accused of using her white privilege to 'threaten' the livelihood of Black influencer Sasha Exeter.

In an Instagram video, Exeter detailed "offensive" messages she received from Mulroney after posting a generic call-out for people with large online followings to speak up against racism in the wake of George Floyd's murder.

"Listen, I am by no means calling Jess a racist but what I will say is this: she is very well aware of her wealth, her perceived power and privilege because of the colour of her skin," the Canadian blogger told her followers.

"And that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing. Textbook white privilege, really."

The incident saw Mulroney dropped from several TV and brand deals, and subjected to a wave of criticism and backlash.

In her post, the stylist, who is married to Canadian TV anchor Ben Mulroney, thanks the followers who have "loved and supported" her in the fallout of the scandal.

"It can be lonely having the world, friends distance from you and not even ask how you are. But, thankfully, you find the things that truly matter…." she adds.

In her post, Mulroney adds she has "struggled with anxiety and social anxiety" throughout her life, and had "masked it many times".

"This year has been heavy for all of us. Know there is hope. I've found it through sobriety and therapy," she says.

"My life is happy again. I wish this for you all."

Mulroney became close friends with Meghan long before she married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex.

The pair met while Meghan was living in Toronto during her years on TV legal drama Suits, and remained close as she entered royal life.

Mulroney's daughter and twin sons were all included in Harry and Meghan's bridal party when they married at Windsor Castle in 2018.
