Ivanka Trump criticised for bending coronavirus rules

Ivanka Trump has been criticised for travelling with her family for the first day of Passover on April 8, flouting her own country's coronavirus guidelines to stay home.

Her husband Jared Kushner is a practising Orthodox Jew and Ivanka, 38, converted to the faith when they were married.

The daughter of US President Donald Trump travelled approximately 321 kilometres with her family to the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.

She and Kushner, who works as a senior adviser to his father-in-law, reside with their three children in Washington DC.

A source told the New York Times that the family made the trip and stayed in Bedminster, working from the location for a few days.

The current US coronavirus health advice states that residents should stay home when possible. Ivanka shared this advice in a video post on Twitter on March 30, telling Americans to "please, please" stay at home, adding that, "social distancing saves lives".

The post said: "Those lucky enough to be in a position to stay at home, please, please do so. Each and every one of us plays a role in slowing the spread."

A White House official has defended Ivanka's trip, telling NBC News Trump National Golf Club is considered a family home and that her travel was "no different than had she been travelling to/from work" and the location was "less populated than the surrounding area near her home in D.C."

"While at Bedminster she has been practising social distancing and working remotely. Her travel was not commercial. She chose to spend a holiday in private with her family," they added.

It isn't known if the family drove or flew to the location.

The couple has since returned to Washington.
