Italian TV show cancelled over 'sexist' segment

An Italian TV show has been cancelled after it aired a 'sexist' segment.

The show was called Detto Fatto, which translates to mean No Sooner Said Than Done, and the segment in question was one about how women could look sexy while shopping.

The segment was presented by a ballerina and pole dancing teacher by the name of Emily Angelillo.

Her grocery shopping outfit of choice was leather shorts and high heels. Standing poised with her shopping trolley, Angelillo proceeded to saunter to the supermarket 'shelf' and pose herself in such a way she would be deemed 'sexy' by those pausing to watch her antics.

She demonstrated potentially 'sexy' moves such as bending down to pick something up off the floor in a "non-vulgar" way and reaching for something on the top shelf.

Even by Italy's standards, a country where scenes of men whistling and chasing women down the street were recently still considered sport, the segment was slammed.

Many viewers thought they were watching a parody before realising the segment was serious and taking to Twitter to voice their protest.

One viewer who protested was Italian government minister Teresa Bellanova.

She tweeted: "For how long must we continue talking about women in a false, stereotypical way, with stiletto heels, sexy moves, always perfect, mermaids or witches?"

The show has since been cancelled and the CEO of Rai 2, Fabrizio Salini, has ordered an investigation into how the segment got to air.

He stated that the segment "nothing to do with the spirit of the public service and with the editorial line of Rai".
