Three reasons why I'll never be a fan of everyone's favourite shower cleaning hack

There is one shower cleaning hack you'll see popping up on social media every time yet another person realises it's a game changer.

And it can be, thanks to how much easier it makes what can be a tough and tiring chore.

But seconds into trying it, I knew it wasn't for me and that the downsides definitely outweigh the convenience.

This hack, which is demonstrated in this TikTok from Carolina Mccauley, involves pouring dishwashing detergent into a dish wand – a cleaning tool normally used for washing dishes – and leaving it in your shower so that you can quickly clean while you're in there.

Some people who swear by the hack add vinegar with the dishwashing detergent for an even stronger cleaning solution.

During a shower one night I gave the hack a go, hoping it would revolutionise my cleaning routine.

While it did make my shower glass clean, I noticed the sponge had a much smaller surface area than the folded microfibre cloth and scourers I usually use. This meant it took longer to clean even half of one side than it would with a regular sponge and kind of tired my small hand out from all the scrubbing while holding the slim handle.

I considered whether I could just clean one section a night but since it made for a longer and less pleasant shower than necessary I just tried something else.

So when the shower glass looks dirty, I just pop a sponge and a bottle of detergent in the shower and scrub with that instead. It's a lot faster and by rinsing and squeegeeing afterwards the glass looked crystal clear with less effort.

The only space I can see the dish wand hack being useful for is the bathroom vanity, as it's such a small space and needs cleaning more often than shower glass.

The second reason I don't use this hack is because it's not very nice to look at a bright yellow and green or blue sponge with a bright green, or whatever colour your detergent is, handle.

My shower isn't the most beautiful anyway, but the shampoo bottles and soap look much nicer than the handled sponge did.

Even my plastic squeegee is more pleasant to look at, and that's saying something because it's very dull.

I've considered nicer-looking dish wands in different colours and tried finding larger sponge-heads but nothing looked the goods, which brings me to my third reason.

When I was shopping around for dish wands I noticed just how much plastic is on the back of each sponge.

If it was just the sponge you were replacing each time it wouldn't be as bad, but it's a sponge with a chunk of plastic you're throwing away – and yes, you do need to replace it and more often than you think.

Given how much plastic I already use and dispose of, I didn't want to add to it for a hack I'm not keen on.

That final discovery confirmed my initial opinion of the hack, which is that it works brilliantly for some people, but it's just not for me.

Even though I think it could be useful for the bathroom vanity and spot cleaning the mirror after flossing, a quick wipe with a cloth after brushing my teeth does the job fine. If it needs more than that a drop of detergent on a damp cloth is all I need.

Despite that, I do think this hack makes a lot of sense so I would totally recommend it to anyone finding it hard to clean their shower regularly.

But I'll keep going with the good old-fashioned whacking some detergent on a cloth or scourer method, because that's what works for me.
