The $10 Kmart buy that turned my sad-looking fridge into a meal-prepping powerhouse
It's easier to eat the entire rainbow of fruit and vegetables when they're stored beautifully like this. Rachael Gavin

My goals for 2026 include cooking more meals and eating a wider variety of fruits and vegetables.
But looking at my fridge setup I realised if I'm going to get organised and be able to utilise more of it for fruit and veg than my crisper drawer I'm going to need a few supplies.
That's because right now my fridge organisation system consists only of one container to pop frozen meat in so it can defrost without leaking on anything else.
There is not a lot going on in this fridge right now. Rachael Gavin
To fulfil my vision of a fridge filled with colourful fruit and veg I checked out Kmart's new fridge storage range and found some real gems.
The four compartment fridge storage container is $10 and features a handle on the lid to easily transport from the fridge to the bench or even to the barbecue or dining table.
I plan to use this one for meal prep because the compartments are perfect for separating diced and grated vegies until it's time to combine them. The handy holes in the bottom of each section mean I can rinse everything just before mixing to keep the items extra fresh.
But right now I've got it set up with fruit and vegies for snacking.

The four compartment fridge storage container would also be great for taking food to picnics and barbecues. Rachael Gavin
The 2.5L fridge storage container is $10 and is the perfect size for baby cos lettuce and I'll definitely use it for that sometimes. It's also a good size for a small bunch of grapes.
I currently have navel oranges in this container. I don't always store oranges in the fridge but in summer and when humidity is high I find they deteriorate faster in a fruit bowl, plus a cold orange on a hot day is one of life's simple pleasures.

I also picked up the 6L fridge storage container for $12 and plan to pop in any vegies that are for a specific recipe so they're all in one spot ready to go.
The brilliant thing about this container is that you can rinse the items in it and then drain the water using the drainage valve on the bottom. There is also an air vent to control airflow in and out of the container.
At the moment I've got grapes in the container rather than leaving them in the bag they came in and forgetting about them because they're tucked away out of sight.
If you want an option for more fruits and vegies there is the two compartment fridge storage container for $13. It's a generous 14.5cm high, 31cm wide and 24cm deep.

The final new fridge storage item I purchased is the fridge storage set for $25.
It includes four different sized containers which can all be packed away in the largest container when not in use.
This is another option that's great for meal prepping with one of the smaller containers featuring three inserts. It's great for keeping diced vegies when a recipe only calls for a small amount of particular items.

This same container is also ideal for organising fruit for the day and makes it easy to pop the container in your work bag or just eat straight from the container at home.
The medium-sized container in this set looks great for prepping lettuce leaves that you can rinse later as needed.
My fridge is now organised for when I start cooking more meals. Rachael Gavin
Since I'm usually only cooking for one I'll mostly use the large container to keep the three smaller containers in but when I need to make a meal to take to a barbecue or picnic I can see the larger one being very handy.
With my fridge now stocked and sorted I'm ready to start achieving those goals for this year.
Now all I need to do is get cooking.
