An overlooked feature could be key to solving most arguments we have about dishwashers
New research shows no appliance sparks devotion and endless frustration quite like the dishwasher.
The Westinghouse data shows 97 per cent of us can't live without the machine, but 66 per cent of all Aussies have arguments about it.
It comes as no surprise to find we're arguing about stacking technique, people not unpacking the dishwasher and whether to pre-rinse.

Stacking techniques are by far the most common argument with 49 per cent of us insisting our way of packing the dishwasher is the right way.
However, the experts at Westinghouse are here to end that right now with a handy tip for knowing whether we're stacking the dishes correctly.
"Mimic the shape of the dishwasher's spray arm," they said.
"Although it might seem like the natural way to stack dishes, facing them all in the same direction isn't the most effective way to achieve a thorough clean. A cycle will have the best result if dishes mimic the shape of the dishwasher's spray arm."

The correct stacking technique also requires the dirtiest dishes to be placed in the middle of the machine to get a good spray from the spray arm.
Cutlery is also best placed with handles up if you have a cutlery basket in your dishwasher for hygiene and convenience.
The placement of smaller and larger items also matters.
"Glasses should be placed on the top shelf to prevent shattering while heavy items like pots or pans go at the bottom, just like when packing groceries into a bag. You'll fit more in, receive a better clean and save time if you properly stack in the first place," Westinghouse experts said.

As for the rinsing argument, dishes don't need to be rinsed before going in the dishwasher.
"Simply scrape off any large food scraps before loading your dishes – there's no need for a thorough pre-rinse since the dishwasher is designed to handle the cleaning. This approach not only conserves water but also helps ensure your dishes come out sparkling clean. If you notice some items aren't fully clean, it might be worth reviewing your stacking technique."
But the other argument topic – people not unpacking the dishwasher – isn't such an easy fix and might just have to be solved in-house.
