An appliance expert has revealed the important reason dishes shouldn't be rinsed before being loaded into the dishwasher.

Matty B from TA Appliances shared the tip in a TikTok video that has so far been viewed a whopping 3.8 million times.

He explained that scraping plates and bowls rather than rinsing them will get a better result and the reason why makes perfect sense.

"Here's something I didn't know until I started working at an appliance store: when you're using a dishwasher, you actually only want to scrape your dishes and not rinse them off completely because the detergent needs something to bind to on your dishes," Matty B said.

"So you'll actually get a cleaner result with just scraping them and leaving a little bit of the food particles on the dishes than you would if you fully rinse off."

Rinsing before packing the dishwasher is quite a controversial topic, with those who rinse typically launching into staunch defense of the act whenever anyone advises not to.

This was evident in the comments section of the TikTok with rinsing fans claiming the tip was aimed at increasing sales and that their dishes were cleaner when rinsed.

"Sounds like something an appliance seller would say to keep up sales!" one said.

Another posted, "My scraped dishes at the end of a dishwasher cycle would beg to differ vs my clean dishes."

TA Appliances shut down those comments with perfect responses.

"That man isn't a salesman. he's trying to help you save money. but do as you wish," the retailer said.

And to the comment about cleaner dishes with rinsing it said, "There are MANY reasons why that can happen. So if rinsing is the only option you have to mitigate the root cause of the problem, then rinse away. cheers!"

Matty B's stance on rinsing before loading the dishwasher is backed up by CHOICE dishwasher expert Ashley Iredale.

He said rinsed dishes make the dishwasher sense the dishes to be cleaner than they actually are so it doesn't work as hard to clean them and that it's a waste of money.

"By all means, scrape your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, but there's no need to rinse – it won't make your dishes any cleaner and it'll just use more water," Iredale explained.

"Plus, by rinsing your plates clean before washing, you're showing a complete lack of faith in your dishwasher's ability to do the one job you paid all that money for it to do."
