'This is genuinely depressing': What $20 of groceries looked like in 2018 compared to now

A financial expert has compared grocery prices today to what they were in 2018, laying bare the impact of inflation on cost-of-living, particularly in the supermarket.

The video has been shared by Smart Women's Society. They write: "Have you noticed the price of groceries (and pretty much everything else) getting more and more expensive? This is due to inflation."

In the video we see text overlay which reads, "What $20 of groceries looked like in 2018..."

The camera scrolls past the grocery haul which includes tuna, milk, pasta, fruit and vegetables as well as Weet-Bix, Milo, almond milk and popcorn.

Also in the video we see grapes, tomato sauce and barbeque sauce. The groceries have been purchased at Coles.

This is then compared to what $20 will get you today, and the difference is stark.

The text overlay in the video reads: "What $20 groceries looks like in 2023..." We see six items only. There is almond milk, popcorn, pasta and three tins of tuna.

"I don't believe it is all inflation.. it is also greedy CEOs wanting to keep their profit margins looking good!" one Instagrammer comments.

Another shared their feelings about the increasing cost-of-living.

"In 2015/16 we literally had $30 for food for the week... we wouldn't survive if this was the case in 2023," they share. "8 odd years later and we just bought our house with cash. No crazy interest or mortgage rates. It's nothing fancy but it's our fancy... Not sure why I am sharing way to much info but this post triggered how far we have come."

One simply states: "Can it go back down? because this is messed up."

One shared their strategy for coping with increasing grocery prices. "We now have to be savvy with our purchases.. I try to meal plan but get sick of the same thing day after day," they share.

"This is genuinely depressing, everything is going up but wages," another says.

"Grocery in Australia has become too expensive," one Instagrammer laments. "Can't afford to buy vegetables or any food that has nutrition. Not exaggerating but I clench my fist in aisles of Coles and Woolworths."

"Is it sad I know the prices of all these products and totaled them up in my head?" another added.
