Girlfriend defends boyfriend after 'cruel' joke marriage proposal

A woman has spoken out in defense of her boyfriend after he staged a joke marriage proposal to her over Christmas.

After Hannah Luck shared a video of the controversial moment on TikTok, her boyfriend received a barrage of comments over the cruelty of the act.

In the video (which can be viewed above) the man is seen holding a small, square jewellery box. He tells Luck, "I love you so much, it's been six years" before getting down on bended knee before saying, "Will you please... take these earrings?"

By this time Luck, clearly expecting a marriage proposal, is seen crying in delight and surprise - only to be met with the earrings and a laughing boyfriend.

A voice off camera says, "I knew it" before others joined in, laughing.

The video has been viewed 1.3 million times on TikTok, with one commenter calling it "heartbreaking" and another saying Luck should throw "the whole boy away please"

"The AUDACITY. Like this is just mean," reads one comment.

"Good, he's in the perfect position to be *kicked in the face*," another states.

"My ex did this - he is my ex," said another.

Seeing the backlash, Luck explained she and her boyfriend had a long and detailed history of playing jokes on each other, and she wasn't upset by the fake marriage proposal, which she says happened in 2019.

She also revealed they had since become engaged - for real.

"I'm pretty surprised this video got as many views as it did. Also kind of taken back by how many people really hate my fiancé," she said.

"He's not a bad person, I posted this because I thought it was funny. Our relationship is filled with us playing jokes on each other."
