'Literally tastes like the top of a Woolies mudcake': The hot cross bun flavour causing a stir

There's nothing quite as quintessentially Aussie as the beloved Woolies mud cake.

Although my requests to have it officially incorporated into the Australian flag have thus far proven unsuccessful, perhaps the next best thing is receiving a brand new spin on the iconic supermarket staple.

Mud cake enthusiasts rejoice, for Woolworths has released a truly stacked line-up of hot cross bun varieties for the 2026 Easter season – and there's one flavour in particular that is sure to be an instant hit.

A brand new take on the cake will be available from Wednesday, January 7 – in hot cross bun form.

You read that correctly: chocolate ganache-filled hot cross buns, intended to replicate the exact taste of the cake's icing, will be available at Woolworths supermarkets from tomorrow.

Woolworths' resident hot cross bun expert and Bakery Merchandise Manager Donald Keith said hot cross bun season is "all about fun and innovation."

"With proven fan favourites like Cinnabon and Caramelised Biscuit back on the shelves, we knew we had to add another iconic flavour to the mix."

The mudcake hot cross bun tops the list of other indulgent flavours hitting the shelves this Easter season, the likes of which include returning favourite Cinnebon, caramelised biscuit and yet another distinctly Aussie variation; Cadbury Caramello.

Despite the craze surrounding limited-edition flavours year on year, Keith says nothing truly beats the original.

Woolies' traditional hot cross buns remain "the most popular pick" throughout the season.

Nevertheless, the mudcake variety has already achieved viral status a day ahead of its release, with Aussies posting their assessments of the product to social media.

So do they live up to the hype? According to one hot cross bun fan, it does.

In a review posted to Instagram, self-proclaimed foodie Nectro Vlangos (@nectoriouspapi) described the buns as "beautiful."

He says the gooey centre is similar to the texture of Nutella spread. Instagram

"The texture almost reminds me of Nutella as well," he added, referencing the popular chocolate spread.

All in all, Vlangos' final assessment was that if you enjoy rich, chocolatey baked goods, then the newest variety of hot cross bun will be right up your alley.

The one thing he'd suggest, however, is making sure to heat them up prior for a more enjoyable snack.

And if it turns out the mudcake flavour isn't for you, fear not; the much-anticipated Caramello variety will be hitting Woolies' shelves on January 28.
