'They're really taking us for idiots at this point': Detail on Woolies' roast beef sparks fierce debate

An angry Woolworths customer has accused the supermarket retailer of price gouging by adding water to some of it's meat products.

"Woolies now proudly displaying that they fill their beef with water," the customer shares on Reddit's 'Australia' thread.

"They're really taking us for idiots at this point," the add.

The Woolworths customer also shares two photos of a package of topside roast which is labelled: "Australian beef, moisture infused topside roast."

The label also states: "Lightly infused for juiciness and tenderness."

The piece of beef costs $18.00 a kilo, with this particular selection totaling $18.56.

The second photo of the beef package clearly shows a watery-like substance in the packaging.

While this Woolworths customer clearly believes the water is added to increase the weight of the beef and thereby the price, some Redditers have offered an alternate explanation.

"Injecting meat with brine makes it moist and tasty. Read up, it's a traditional bbq/smoking technique," one suggested.

"They've had an infusion message on the packs for ages," another said.

"That item has been around for over ten years now. It's called 'brining', and it's one way to tenderise tougher cuts like topside," another Redditer explained.

“I'm outraged that Woolies are clearly labelling what's inside their beef instead of hiding it. Someone contact ACA asap," said another.

Others agree with the Woolworths customer.

"Moisture or marinade infused meat is one of the easiest ways to make money from value adding in butchery, it's been around for a while now," one said.

Woolworths Australia has been contacted for comment.
