Wingstop is opening its first restaurant in Australia - and we got a preview taste of what's on offer

After years and years and years of watching Americans delight in their vast variety of delicious fast food choices on social media, it seems it's finally our time, Australia.

Recently we had our first ever Wendy's open on the Gold Coast, Taco Bell has graced our shores for years now, and of course we've got a few Five Guys restaurants scattered around.

But today, it's been announced a new North American fast food joint is set to land Down Under, and this one's a doozy.

Wingstop has today confirmed it will be opening its first ever Aussie store in Sydney's Kings Cross this Saturday, May 17.

Luckily for us, the 9honey team got an exclusive preview taste of what's on offer.

The new Wendy's menu item you can only get in Australia

The Wingstop team delivered us some delicious chips (or fries, as they're sure to be referred to as on the menu), a side of corn and eight flavours of wings varying in spice levels.

So, ahead of the launch of Wingstop's first Aussie restaurant, we thought we'd do a public service and share our thoughts on each wing we tried so you, our loyal readers, know exactly what to get when you make your first order.

Hawaiian

If you're a pineapple on pizza person, this is going to be your wing.

Now, we won't lie to you, this bad boy is sweet but it also has a nice savoury undertone.

The best way we can describe is something similar to a sweet and sour pork dish, but in a wing.

Spice Level: 0/5

Garlic Parmesan

Cheese lovers, unite!

We'll be honest, this one is definitely more parmesan than garlic, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Our recommendation would be to only order if you're a cheese fan, if you're not to keen on the dairy delight this might not be the wing for you.

Spice level: 0/5

Lemon Pepper

This one was hit and miss with our team. Those who liked it loved it, but some just weren't a fan.

It's not as peppery as it looks on first sight, but there's definitely a subtle peppery kick there, and plenty of lemon (don't worry though, it's not sour – just zesty).

If you're not a fan of spice but you want a wing that you can down a whole 20-pack of in one sitting, this is your go-to.

Spice level: 0.5/5

Mild

First impressions on this wing was that it's orange – and we mean very orange.

While we're not sure where the colouring comes from, we can tell you this wing is just a nice, juicy piece of chicken.

It doesn't have a lot of flavour so it's perfect for those who don't love sauce, but it does have a very subtle kick to it.

Spice level: 1.5/5

Spicy Korean Q

Here's where things kicked up a notch.

We jumped up in spice here and while it wasn't burning, the Spicy Korean Q definitely has some heat to it.

Think: barbeque sauce but elevated. It's sticky, a little bit spicy, and packed with flavour.

Spice level: 3/5

Louisiana Rub

Don't inhale, just bite.

The Louisiana Rub has that signature southern smoky flavour, with plenty of punch behind it.

This one was a fan-favourite for most, being the perfect balance of smokey and spicy.

But, if you can't handle spice, this is probably where you should tap out.

Spice level: 3.5/5

Cajun

Just by looking at this one you know what you're getting yourself into.

It's coated in a thick, spicy seasoning, and it tastes exactly how it looks.

But, be careful because it isn't an instant kind of spice – it creeps up on you slowly.

Spice level: 4/5

Mango Habanero

Now this was probably the most interesting flavour we tried.

You can definitely taste the mango, but almost to the point the habanero is overshadowed.

Don't get us wrong, it's still spicy, but most of our team found it less spicy than the Cajun even though it's one spot higher on the spice scale.

If we're being honest, though, the confusion could be coming from the fact our mouths were still on fire from the Cajun wings, so we'll give Mango Habanero the benefit of the doubt.

Spice level: 4/5
