There are plenty of differences between Australia and the US, but there's one thing Americans just can't seem to wrap their heads around.

Here in Australia, we don't bat an eye when we're given soy sauce inside a plastic fish alongside our sushi.

While it's something we see on the regular, most Americans are baffled by the nifty invention.

Americans are baffled by our fish shaped soy sauce containers. Reddit

"Americans put soy sauce in pouches that tear open and lose half the sauce. Australians have soy sauce fish, which is correct," wrote @chelseaonik on X (formerly Twitter).

While plenty of commenters pointed out the most controversial aspect of the design - single-use plastics aren't great for our environment - others were shocked by the adorable innovation.

"Holy f--- y'all got soy sauce fish?! I need to immediately invent the 'ketchup bald eagle' for the US," wrote one commenter.

Some Aussies were surprised to find out Americans have never had the pleasure of squeezing soy sauce out of a cute little fish, while friends over in the UK were quick to point out that they have the same design.

But the funny thing is, the soy sauce fish packet actually originated in the US.

Some say it was the team at Ceasers Palace in Las Vegas that kicked off the idea.

They wanted a premium soy sauce container to serve in their restaurants and enlisted the brand Little Soya to help, and the soy sauce fish packet was born.

The second story of the creation dates all the way back to 1950s Japan, when the original glass and ceramic containers became to expensive following the war.

Teruo Watanabe, the founder of manufacturer Asahi Sogyo, apparently spearheaded the idea of plastic packaging, but it wasn't just fish.

Unfortunately for those with a deep desire to find the true origins of the soy sauce fish packet, it seems we'll never truly know which story is the truth.

However, what we do know is that if it really was created in the US, Las Vegas has kept it under lock and key.
